The major storm cell hitting Sydney has now turned deadly. Authorities called today a life-threatening emergency situation and late this afternoon police confirmed a man died in floodwaters near Abbotsford.

An East Coast Low which has already triggered serious flooding is now moving closer to Sydney threatening even more rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

At the same time, Warragamba Dam has been spilling since 2 am, worsening flood peaks across the region.
