‘You need to go home’ was the message to protesters from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz after a fourth night of chaos shook Minneapolis.
Protesters, angered by the killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, under a policeman’s knee, have been undeterred by the largest ever deployment of the National Guard in Minnesota’s history, or the introduction of an 8pm curfew.
For the fourth night in a row, Minneapolis burned. Stores were looted and businesses were set alight.
The Pentagon has now put the military on alert, ready to be deployed if needed. Meanwhile protests have spread to other cities across America, including the US capital, Washington.
The White House was temporarily placed on lockdown with the US Secret Service closing entrances and exits, after hundreds of people rallied outside the White House chanting George Floyd’s last words, ‘I can’t breathe.’
Donald Trump tweeted his praise for the Secret Service following the incident, and accused the demonstrators of being ‘professionally managed,’ adding that they ‘were just there to cause trouble.’
Meanwhile, back in Minneapolis, the white police officer that killed George Floyd has been arrested on murder and manslaughter charges, and his wife, a former Mrs Minnesota beauty pageant winner, has filed for divorce.
