It was on this day in 1945 that the first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the United States.
It signalled the beginning of the end of the second world war.
It was a devastating attack killing at least 70,000 people – not to mention the lingering after effects of nuclear war, with thousands of people later dying of injuries and radiation-related illnesses.
