‘The clock is no longer ticking’: Ursula von der Leyen and Michel Barnier make statement after deal

The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “‘The clock is no longer ticking’: Ursula von der Leyen and Michel Barnier make statement after deal” – below is their description.

The European Commission president said real sovereignty was to be found inside the EU rather than outside it as she announced that the Brexit trade deal with Britain was done on Thursday.

Ursula von der Leyen said the EU had been able to wrest concessions from Britain on the “level playing field” guarantees and fishing because it was negotiating “from a position of strength” with “the might” of 450 million citizens behind it.

The EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, beside Mrs von der Leyen at the press conference in Brussels, said: “The clock is no longer ticking.”

Mrs von der Leyen said: “No deal in the world can change the reality of gravity in today’s economy. And in today’s world, we are one of the giants.

“We should cut through the soundbites and ask ourselves what sovereignty really actually means in the 21st century.

“For me, it is about being able to seamlessly do work, travel, study and do business in 27 countries. It is about pooling our strength and speaking together in a world full of great powers. And in a time of crisis, it is about pulling each other up instead of trying to get back to your feet, alone.”
