The battle for Mosul leaves thousands in despair

Iraqi forces say they’ve captured two key neighbourhoods in the battle for Mosul that will allow a safe corridor for civilians to escape the city.

The military operation to recapture Iraq’s second largest city from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) began last year.

It has forced an estimated 750,000 people to flee their homes.

Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker reports from Erbil in Northern Iraq.
