South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Thailand’s bat guano collectors undeterred by potential coronavirus connection” – below is their description.
For generations, villagers living near the city of Nakhon Sawan in Central Thailand have been relying on bats’ droppings, or guano, as their source of income. Bat guano is a highly effective fertiliser and the droppings from a large cave-dwelling population of bats could net collectors millions of US dollars each year. With the lucrative job, however, come huge risks. Without protective suits or equipment, the workers are potentially exposed to dangerous viruses which can pass from bats or other cave animals. Yet they remain undaunted by some scientists’ suggestions that bats could be linked to the coronavirus pandemic that has swept the world.
