    Nine villages in a district near the Malaysian border were sealed off by Thai authorities on May 22, 2021, after health officials confirmed new Covid-19 outbreaks of the South African variant. The mutated strain, which is considered more contagious, was detected in eight patients from southern Thailand’s Tak Bai district. Authorities closed off nine villages and imposed an indefinite lockdown to prevent a wider outbreak.
