The success of teen prodigy Sota Fujii has made shogi, the traditional Japanese version of chess, popular among younger generations. Fujii reached the game’s highest rank in July 2021 at the age of 19, the youngest player to reach the ninth-rank. Apprentices must attain first rank by 21 years old and fourth level by 26 to become a professional player.
