The United States ended its longest war on Monday night as its last planes flew out of Kabul, leaving a small number of Americans still in Afghanistan.

There was celebratory gunfire in Kabul as the Taliban declared “full independence” following the departure of the final group of five US jets.

“Congratulations to Afghanistan… this victory belongs to us all,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters hours later from the runway of the airport.
