Taiwan representative: A question of ‘if not when’ China will attack | DW News

DW News published this video item, entitled “Taiwan representative: A question of ‘if not when’ China will attack | DW News” – below is their description.

China says it will ‘not renounce the use of force’ against Taiwan to achieve reunification. The warning comes in a white paper on Taiwan that China issued on Wednesday. It rounds off a week of the largest ever Chinese military exercises around Taiwan. They came in reponse to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island last week. Taiwan responded to the Chinese drills with exercises of its own and a warning from the island’s Foreign Minister that China wanted to control large swathes of the Western Pacific.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
