Taiwan continues to see hundreds of new infections a day. The island reported 286 cases on Thursday – marking the sixth day in a row the number has reached well over 100.

The island is now under a level-three alert – its second highest warning. All schools have been closed for 10 days. More than 400,000 doses from AstraZeneca arrived via the World Health Organization’s COVAX sharing program on Wednesday. Taiwan has ordered more than 20 million doses, including from Moderna and AstraZeneca but had only received 300,000 so far.

  • In This Story: Taiwan

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
