Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) raised the COVID-19 alert level for the cities of Taipei and New Taipei from Level 2 to Level 3 on Saturday, as the cities struggle to contain surging domestic infections.

The new alert will be effective from May 15 through to May 28, Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang announced.

Taiwan Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said the new restrictions are intended to trap the virus in “these hot zones” and curb its spread.

A Level 3 alert means people are now required to wear masks at all times when they leave their homes.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
