BBC News published this video item, entitled “Suspect in London police shooting “was in handcuffs” when he opened fire – BBC News” – below is their description.
Tributes have been paid to police officer Sergeant Matiu Ratana, who was shot dead in a custody centre in Croydon, in South London. A 23 year old suspect, who subsequently turned the weapon on himself, is in a critical condition in hospital. The police watchdog said the suspect was in a custody suite with his hands cuffed behind his back when he opened fire. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick, said the force is “mourning the great loss” of a “much loved colleague” who was “big in stature and big in heart.” Originally from New Zealand, Sergeant Rartna, who was known as Matt, had served with the Met for almost 30 years. Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford in Croydon.
