Guardian News published this video item, entitled “Sunak shouldn’t need adviser to know Nadhim Zahawi not paying tax is unethical, says Labour” – below is their description.
In an urgent question on the Tory party chair’s taxes, Angela Rayner asked how Rishi Sunak could claim to deliver integrity and professionalism when Zahawi, whose taxes are being investigated by Sunak’s ethics adviser, was still serving in his post. The deputy Labour leader also asked why the prime minister needed an ethics adviser on this issue.
Cabinet office minister Jeremy Quin defended the government’s decision to let Zahawi keep serving, telling MPs that the ministerial code was applied correctly in this case, and that any further issues would be revealed in the investigation.
Earlier on Monday, Sunak told reporters that he would ask his new ethics adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, to investigate remaining questions about Zahawi’s taxes but that the former chancellor would not need to step down during the investigation. Zahawi welcomed the decision by the PM and said he was confident he had acted properly.
