The Suez Canal blockage will have a “massive impact” on the production and availability of goods across Europe and Asia, according to a former merchant mariner.
Salvatore Mercogliano, who is also an Associate Professor of History at North Carolina’s Campbell University, explained that 10pc of the world’s trade passes through the Suez Canal, and that closing it means vessels have no way of transiting through it.
Mercogliano also noted the number of accidents on the Canal in the past year has been increasing, which has had an impact on other countries’ economies.
