Egyptian authorities have seized the ship that blocked the Suez Canal, saying its owners owe more than a billion dollars in compensation. The Japanese-owned ‘ever given’ container ship, has been in a lake separating two sections of the canal since it was dislodged. Egypt says the ship will not be able to leave the country until the financial dispute is resolved. International supply chains were thrown into disarray, when the 400-metre vessel clogged one of the world’s most vital waterways last month. Maritime consultant, Dean Mikkelsen says “it’s up to dispute and negotiation”.

Egypt, a country linking northeast Africa with the Middle East, dates to the time of the pharaohs. The capital, Cairo, is home to Ottoman landmarks like Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities.
