The chairman of Sudan’s ruling body, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has dissolved the transitional government – and declared a state of emergency.
Al-Burhan has pledged to hold elections, as scheduled, but he says the military had a duty to intervene.
A number of ministers and civilian officials have been detained, including Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.
Internet and mobile phone services are down, the airport is closed, and the TV and radio headquarters were raided.
Soldiers have confronted large numbers of people who have responded to calls to resist the military takeover. According to the Sudanese doctors’ committee, three people have died from gunfire.
