Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to provide an update alongside other ministers on Monday on the federal government’s ongoing response to the impact of post-tropical storm Fiona in Atlantic Canada.
Trudeau will be joined by Defence Minister Anita Anand, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, and National Revenue Minister Diane Lebouthillier.
On Sunday, Emergency Management Minister Bill Blair said the government had approved federal assistance requests for both Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will be deployed to help with roadway clearing and removal of debris, as well as aerial assistance to get a better understanding of the extent of the damage.
Blair also commented on the death of a 73-year-old woman from Port aux Basques, Nfld.,, after RCMP confirmed Sunday that her body had been found. The woman was reported missing Saturday morning after her home was damaged by Fiona. At least one death was also reported in Prince Edward Island.
During the press conference, he said the tragedy is a reminder of “how truly dangerous that storm has been.”
Fiona hammered Atlantic Canada Friday night into Saturday, causing widespread power outages, washing out roads and downing trees.
