Sting operation | First ‘murder hornet’ nest in US destroyed

RT published this video item, entitled “Sting operation | First ‘murder hornet’ nest in US destroyed” – below is their description.

Now that’s what you call a sting operation. The first confirmed nest in the US of the invasive Asian giant hornets known as ‘murder hornets’ has been destroyed. Pest control specialists dressed in protective suits used some serious sci-fi looking gear – and vacuum cleaner – during a large-scale operation to dismantle the nest near Blaine, Washington on Sunday. They wrapped the infested tree with a plastic membrane before sucking the insects out with the giant vacuum, safely containing them in a large transparent tube. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) first received reports of the hornets last December and finally managed to capture some this week. These captive hornets were fitted with miniature tracking devices, leading the WSDA to the nest. Asian giant hornets are the largest species of hornet in the world, boasting a wingspan of 7cm (3in) and can kill humans, but they are routinely deadly for honey bees: invading beehives, decapitating their inhabitants and claiming the nest as their own. Which is rather rude

The rather shrill name “murder hornet” has been given to the Asian giant hornet, which includes the colour form referred to as the Japanese giant hornet. It is the world’s largest hornet. It is native to temperate and tropical East Asia, South Asia, Mainland Southeast Asia, and parts of the Russian Far East. It has been found in the USA, where it is regarded as an invasive non-native species.
