“Stay at home”: Second national lockdown for England from Thursday

The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “”Stay at home”: Second national lockdown for England from Thursday” – below is their description.

Boris Johnson has announced a second national lockdown across England, starting from Thursday until 2nd December. Alongside chief medical officer for England Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, Mr Johnson made the announcement saying, “Now is the time to take action because there is no alternative”. Non-essential shops, pubs, and restaurants will shut, but schools and universities will remain open. The PM has acknowledged the strain on businesses, which he says he is “truly sorry” for. The furlough scheme will be extended throughout November in light of this. The Government held an emergency cabinet meeting at 1:30pm today, following leaked rumours that a national lockdown could be on the cards from as early as next week. The announcement was consistently pushed back, from 4pm, to 5pm, to 6:30pm and eventually appearing at around 6.50pm. The hope is that the action will slow the spread of the disease and allow ministers to ease restrictions into Christmas. Here’s what will happen at-a-glance:  1. People must stay at home, with the following exceptions: – Education – Work (if you cannot work from home) – Recreational exercise with one person from another household or your household – To escape injury or harm – To shop for food and essentials – To provide care for vulnerable people as a volunteer 2. Pubs, restaurants and non-essential retail must close. 3. Workplaces should stay open where people can’t work from home in the constructing and manufacturing centres.  4. Schools, childcare, colleges and universities will stay open. 5. No shielding – but PM urges those who are clinically extremely vulnerable to minimise their contact with others. 6. Furlough will be extended until December, with time-limited measures from November 5.
