The acts of vandalism come amid fierce global debate ober the place of historical statues in modern life.
The issue has been hotly contested in the United States, where hundred of monuments to confederate generals stand.
And as movements for racial justice gain momentum, so has the discussion in Australia over whether figures like Captain James Cook deserve to be immortalised.
