South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Sri Lanka’s ‘organic revolution’ threatens country’s prized tea industry” – below is their description.
Sri Lanka’s “organic revolution” is endangering its lucrative tea industry. The country is seeking to become the world’s first 100 per cent organic food producer by banning the use of fertiliser. However, tea plantation owners fear withdrawing the use of agricultural chemicals will significantly affect crop yield and in turn harm the nation’s struggling economy. Tea is Sri Lanka’s biggest single export, accounting for more than US$1.25 billion a year. According to a local tea association, around 3 million people stand to lose their jobs if the industry collapses.
