South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Sri Lankans demand president resigns amid nation’s worst economic crisis in 70 years” – below is their description.
Protests continue in Sri Lanka with many demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid a deepening economic crisis that has seen inflation reach an all-time high. The nationwide inflation rate was 45.3 per cent in May 2022 according to the most recent data, as Sri Lanka struggles with its worst economic situation since its independence in 1948. The island nation of 22 million people is running short of fuel, food, cooking gas and medicine as schools and government services close to conserve fuel. The government estimates that at least US$5 billion will be needed to cover the cost of essential imports for the rest of the year. On June 20, a 10-member delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) arrived in the capital Colombo for talks with Gotabaya’s government about a bailout package.
