FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “Sri Lanka gives emergency powers to military and police following PM resignation • FRANCE 24” – below is their description.
Sri Lanka gave emergency powers on Tuesday to its military and police to detain people without warrants, after a day of deadly clashes that killed seven people and injured more than 200, in violence that prompted Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to resign. As the Indian Ocean nation battles its worst economic crisis in history, journalist Andrew Fidel Fernando tells France 24 that “the resignation is huge” and it won’t be long before Rajapaksa’s brother, the president, will be under pressure to resign as well. He describes “an intense situation in Sri Lanka” that has been unfolding as thousands of protesters take to the streets, leading to violent clashes.
