The ceremony marked the successful conclusion of a United Nations mediation process, which aimed at facilitating a peaceful solution to the longstanding border dispute between the Gabonese Republic and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres today (3 Mar) welcomed “the successful conclusion of a mediation process at the United Nations, which was aimed at facilitating a peaceful solution to the protracted border dispute between the Gabonese Republic and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.”
Speaking at the ceremony of the exchange of notifications of fulfillment of domestic procedures between the Parties to the Special Agreement between the two countries, Guterres said, “both countries, assisted by the United Nations, worked tirelessly, for more than two decades, to get to this point.”
He continued, “this step demonstrates the strong commitment of the United Nations to the peaceful settlement of international disputes and underlines the relevance of the various instruments of multilateralism in the evolving international context.”
The Secretary-General also congratulated Equatorial Guinea and Gabon for agreeing to submit their long-standing border dispute to the International Court of Justice.
Guterres stated, “I very much hope that the steps taken today by the Republic of Gabon and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea will be a source of inspiration for other countries facing similar challenges in the region and beyond. By submitting their disputes to the International Court of Justice, the Parties will demonstrate that it is possible to settle their international disputes peacefully in accordance with international law.”

Su Excelencia Señor Michel Xavier Biang, Representante Permanente de Gabón ante las Naciones Unidas, Su Excelencia Señor Anatolio Ndong Mba, Representante Permanente de Guinea Ecuatorial ante las Naciones Unidas, Estimados Colegas, Señoras y Señores,
Hoy, celebramos el final exitoso de un proceso de mediación en las Naciones Unidas, cuyo objetivo era facilitar una solución pacífica a la prolongada controversia fronteriza entre la República Gabonesa y la República de Guinea Ecuatorial.
Con la conclusión del acuerdo para someter su controversia ante la Corte Internacional de Justicia, ambos países han reafirmado su compromiso con la letra y el espíritu de la Carta de las Naciones Unidas.
Ambos países, asistidos por las Naciones Unidas, trabajaron de manera incansable, por más de dos décadas, para poder llegar a este punto. Con este paso se demuestra el firme compromiso de las Naciones Unidas para la solución pacífica de las controversias internacionales, y subraya la pertinencia de los instrumentos diversos del multilateralismo en el contexto internacional evolucionando.
Je tiens à féliciter la République gabonaise et la République de Guinée équatoriale pour avoir fait preuve de volonté politique, de courage et de persévérance dans l’accomplissement de leurs processus internes respectifs pour l’entrée en vigueur du Compromis.
Par cet échange de notifications, les Parties ont confirmé leur volonté de rechercher un règlement judiciaire, en plaçant leur confiance en la Cour internationale de Justice pour trouver une solution juste et durable à leur différend.
Je voudrais profiter de cette occasion pour remercier tous ceux qui ont rendu cela possible, notamment les médiateurs des Nations Unies, M. Yves Fortier et M. Nicolas Michel, ainsi que mon prédécesseur, l’ancien Secrétaire général Mr. BAN Ki-moon, l’ancien Secrétaire général adjoint aux affaires politiques, M. Jeffrey Feltman, et le Secrétaire général adjoint aux affaires juridiques et Conseiller juridique de l’Organisation des Nations Unies, M. Miguel de Serpa Soares.

J’espère vivement que les mesures prises aujourd’hui par la République gabonaise et la République de Guinée équatoriale seront une source d’inspiration pour d’autres pays confrontés à des défis similaires, dans la région et au-delà. En soumettant leurs différends à la Cour internationale de Justice, les Parties démontreront qu’il est possible de régler pacifiquement leurs différends internationaux conformément au droit international.
