  • Spain, the hardest hit European country, saw its death toll hit 18,000 today. This comes as it reports the number of new infections dropped to its lowest level since the country imposed a nationwide lockdown last month. Confirmed cases of infection rose by over 2,400 to 172,000. Restrictions have helped to slow a spiraling death rate that reached its peak in early April. Health Minister Salvador Illa said that Spain remains on lockdown. Shops, bars and public spaces are to stay closed until at least April 26. But some economic activities, including construction and manufacturing, were allowed to reopen.
