Spain destroyed a collection of more than 1,000 guns and other weapons it had seized over the years from the Basque separatist group ETA.

‘We cannot recover the lives we lost. But it is in our power to fight against forgetfulness’ declared Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who presided over the dramatic ceremony.

ETA was officially disbanded in 2018, marking the end of their decades-long violent political campaign in northern Spain and southwestern France. Following the crushing, the weapons will be sent to a foundry to be further disabled.
