South Sudan’s Riek Machar: Peace deal is collapsing

South Sudan’s former Vice President Riek Machar told Al Jazeera that his country will return to civil war if the international community does not help to protect his political status.

Machar left the capital earlier this month, when fighting began between his forces and those loyal to President Salva Kiir erupted.

While in hiding, his party appointed a replacement, Taban Deng Gai, who was accepted as Machar’s successor by President Kiir.

Machar called the appointment “illegal”.

Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reports from Juba.
