Global News published this video item, entitled “South African looters return goods after week of unrest over former president’s jailing” – below is their description.
Community leaders and police retrieved stolen goods from looters on Wednesday after a night of unrest in South Africa that saw shopping malls and buildings ransacked.
South Africa’s worst violence in years broke out after last week’s arrest of former president Jacob Zuma with soldiers deployed to stop crowds looting everything from washing machines to fridges and groceries.
Community leaders and members of the military and police patrolled the streets in Johannesburg’s Alexandra township, calling on looters to return goods they had stolen.
The unrest continued on Wednesday as the government called for an end to a week of violence that has killed more than 70 people and wrecked hundreds of businesses.
Zuma, 79, was sentenced last month for defying a court order to give evidence at an inquiry investigating high-level looting during his nine years in office until 2018.
He also faces trial in a separate case on charges including corruption, fraud, racketeering and money laundering. The former president pleaded not guilty in court in May. His foundation said on Tuesday that violence would continue until his release.
