There are fears low vaccination coverage will hamper Melanesian nations’ economic recovery, as well as increasing the risk of allowing new variants to spring up near Australia’s shores.
Alexandre Dayant from the Lowy Institute says Australia should look into investing people on their grounds to combat misinformation in addition to contributing COVID-19 vaccines to the region.
He said the analysis “revealed a region divided”, with the Melanesian nations of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands lagging well behind the rest.
