South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Soaring fuel prices in Nepal lead to violent clashes between student protesters and police” – below is their description.
Around a hundred students protested in the Nepali capital against fuel price hikes on June 20, 2022. Police in Kathmandu reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the protest that broke out after the state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation raised fuel prices. The country’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies said the hike was necessary due to an increase in global oil prices. Fares for public transport jumped by as much as 7.7 per cent the same day following the fuel price increase. Nepal’s 29 million residents are also facing higher food and energy prices amid the country’s surging inflation, which hit a six-year high in May.
