Snow blankets Athens Acropolis as rare storm hits Greek capital

Global News published this video item, entitled “Snow blankets Athens Acropolis as rare storm hits Greek capital” – below is their description.

The Parthenon and other temples of the Acropolis were draped in white on Tuesday as a heavy snowstorm swept through the Greek capital.

Authorities advised the public to restrict their movements in parts of the greater Athens region as the country witnessed its most intense snowfall in more than a decade.

The fire brigade rescued at least 10 people trapped in their vehicles around Athens and responded to more than 400 calls for help nationwide.

Fallen trees struck power lines, cutting off electricity in Athens northern suburbs, the power grid operator said, while streets buried in snow were closed to traffic. Two train routes from the capital were cancelled.

The head of the National Meteorological Service, Theodoros Kolydas, said the snowfall was the “fiercest, in terms of intensity and volume, in 12 years.”
