US Democratic Senator for Connecticut Chris Murphy listed the country’s failed attempts to effect regime change in Venezuela, including an unsuccessful ‘coup.’ Murphy made the comments at a committee hearing on the Latin American Nation.
The senator could be heard saying: ‘We tried to sort of construct a kind of coup in April of last year, and it blew up in our face when all the generals that were supposed to break with Maduro decided to stick with him in the end.’
Murphy also mentioned how the US’ recognition of Juan Guaido was ‘an unmitigated disaster’ and wasn’t ‘enough to topple the regime’ like they thought it would be. He lamented the US’ current weakened position, by which Washington has been left recognizing someone as the leader of Venezuela who has power over, er, nothing. As meddling in another country’s politics goes, this is pretty blatant.
