Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “‘Small number of soldiers broke the trust’ of the Australian people” – below is their description.
Former SAS troop commander and Liberal MP Andrew Hastie says the Brereton report reveals a “small number of soldiers broke the trust” of the Australian people but “the vast majority upheld that trust”. “I speak for many people who served in the special air service regiment when I say I am grieved by this [report]. It is hard to take, as someone who loves the institution, has served in the institution and was sent to war on behalf of the Australian people as part of that institution,” Mr Hastie said. “I also believe in regimental honour so there is a sense of shame I feel about this. “There’s another side to the story; it is right that we focus on this alleged criminal misconduct but there is a bigger story. “About 80 per cent of the current members of the SAS didn’t actually serve in Afghanistan themselves, so there’s a whole new cohort of operators who aren’t responsible for this conduct, and it would be terrible if we tarnished their name and their reputation with the bad conduct of a few.”
