An eyewitness video emerged showing people running for safety after a gunman shot at protesters with a handgun in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday.
The demonstration was demanding that the statue of Juan de Oñate, New Mexico’s 16th-century colonial governor be removed.
Oñate remains a controversial figure in New Mexico and is particularly infamous for the 1599 massacre of a Pueblo tribe.
The gunman was chased away by protesters before shots were heard off-camera.
The video was filmed by members of the rights group Fight For Our Lives.
One man was wounded in the shooting and taken to a local hospital, but his current condition remains unknown local media reports.
The gunman and a local militia had heckled protesters before the incident, according to an eyewitness from Fight For Our Lives.
Local police arrived and detained the gunman and members of the militia after the shooting.
Protests have erupted across the United States following the death of George Floyd.
