Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe said that Japan and the United States could not stand by if mainland China were to attack Taiwan in the future. Abe made the remarks at a forum organised by the Taiwanese think tank the Institute for National Policy Research. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin called the comments “irresponsible”.
