Global News published this video item, entitled “Sentenced to 6 years in prison, former detained Canadian deported 36 hours later” – below is their description.
Kevin Garratt and his wife Julia were detained by China in 2014 in a case with several parallels to the detentions of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who were detained just days after Canadian authorities arrested Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou at the behest of American authorities.
In an interview, The West Block host Mercedes Stephenson asks Garratt what he thinks will happen to the two Michaels once they get through the trial phase of their arbitrary detention. “They sentenced me to six years in prison. And then thirty six hours later, I was deported. So I would hope that something very similar would happen for both the Michaels,” says Garratt.
