Informal comments to the media by Ambassador Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of February, on Somalia and Syria.

The members of the Security Council welcomed the efforts made by the leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and the Federal member states to find agreement on the implementation of the 17 September electoral model.

Reading a statement issued by the Security Council today (09 Feb), British Ambassador and the President of the Security Council for the month of February Barbara Woodward said, the Council members noted “the progress made and expressed concerns to the talks in Dhusamareb ended without agreement. They commended the role of the African Union in promoting dialogue between Somalia’s parties.”

The members of the Security Council called for “Somalia’s leaders to resume their dialogue urgently and work together in the interests of the people of Somalia to make consensus on the arrangements for the conduct of an inclusive elections with the view to holding them as soon as possible, and in that regard, noted the announcement of further talks on 15 February,” said Ambassador Woodward.

The members of the Security Council also condemned “the terrorist attacks by Al-Shabaab, they reaffirmed their support to the national sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Somalia.”
