Elements to the press by Gert Auväärt, Deputy Permanent Representative of Estonia and President of the Security Council for the month of June, following closed consultations on the Central African Republic.
Following a closed briefing by the Special Representative of the Secretary General for the Central African Republic (CAR) Mankeur Ndiaye, the Security Council Council today (7 jun) issued a statement that “strongly condemned ongoing human rights violations and abuses, and violations of international humanitarian law in the Central African Republic and stressed the need to bring to justice the perpetrators.”
The statement, read by Estonian Ambassador Gert Auväärt, called on all parties “to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.”
The members of thew Security Council, he said, “reiterated the importance of ensuring the full and effective implementation of and compliance with the Status of Forces Agreement.”
The statement noted that “attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes.”
Estonia holds the presidency of the Council for the month of June.
