Afghanistan was once a lucrative stop on the ancient Silk Road that linked the western world to trade with India and China.
The country watched its economy improve slightly after the overthrow of the Taliban in Kabul in 2001, but it has fallen on hard times once again. Fewer security forces brought greater safety concerns and less investment.
Some Afghans, however, are trying to help by investing their own money to start businesses that provide jobs to locals.
Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reports from Kabul.
