A desperate search is underway in Laughtondale for a swimmer who disappeared on the Hawkesbury River.

The 32-year-old was on a houseboat holiday with family and friends when he entered the water and failed to surface.

The father of two was just a few hours into a houseboat holiday with two other families when he got into trouble in the Hawkesbury River, disappearing under the water.

Investigators say the man and his two sons, as well as two other men had taken the tinnie around the river, and when they were around 20 metres from the main boat the victim jumped and swam back.

He made it to the houseboat’s ladder, but went under again and didn’t resurface.

An urgent search got underway last night but due to fading light it was suspended until this morning.Police divers and volunteers have been out again up against tough conditions.

There is zero visibility and the current is extremely strong.
