United Nations published this video item, entitled “Sea of Island – Virtual Reality Experience on Climate Change in the Asia Pacific | UN DPPA” – below is their description.
Meet the communities of the Pacific islands, who already face the devastating impacts of our global climate crisis. Hear their stories in cinematic 360° VR, as they use cultural knowledge to adapt to increasing climate security challenges and safeguard their sacred relationship with the Pacific Sea of islands.
Climate change is posing critical security challenges for Small Islands Developing States in the Pacific. Pacific communities face growing climate change-related security risks that include: impacts on human mobility, including displacement; potential for social tension linked to natural resource access and use; threats to food security, human health and productivity; and threats to territorial integrity and maritime boundaries due to sea-level rise. Leaders in the Pacific region, through the 2018Boe Declaration, have recognized climate change as the single greatest threat to the livelihoods, security and wellbeing of their peoples, and affirmed an expanded concept of security with an increasing emphasis on human security. The UN system is working closely with regional, national and local partners to implement the Boe Declaration, build resilience, and strengthen capacities for the prevention and management of climate-related security risks.
Supported by a financial contribution from the Government of Japan, the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs has developed a Virtual Reality (VR) film to raise awareness on climate security risks with a particular focus on the Pacific region. The VR film, shot in Fiji, explores into various climate-related challenges facing Pacific communities, such as threats to food security, displacement, and natural disasters, as well as highlighting community adaptation and resilience. This immersive experience will deepen audiences’ understanding of the impacts of climate change in the Pacific region and beyond.
Produced by the Innovation Cell of the United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UN DPPA) and PHORIA, in collaboration with Media Farm Studios.
