Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen kill more than 70 people | DW News

DW News published this video item, entitled “Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen kill more than 70 people | DW News” – below is their description.

At least 70 people were killed in an airstrike on a prison run by Houthi rebels in Yemen on Friday. The recent escalation of conflict in the region has drawn condemnation from the UN.

Hours after the air strike, rescue workers are still pulling people out of the ruins of this detention center in the city of Saada and sending them to hospitals.

These people are victims of an intensified conflict between the government led by the Houthi rebels and a Saudi-led coalition, which attempts to restore Yemen’s internationally recognized administration.

Earlier in the week, the Houthis claimed an attack in the United Arab Emirates – a member of the alliance.

It was followed by Saudi airstrikes in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa and then the prison in Saada.

The escalation was condemned by the UN.

Following the latest airstrike, the coalition says the Houthis had not reported the detention center as needing protection.

Yemen’s years-long conflict has claimed more than 130 thousand lives, and civilians are often among those who suffer the most.
