Valley Transit Authority (VTA) board chair Glenn Hendricks named and honoured the victims of the San Jose rail yard shooting that occurred on Wednesday. He said in addition to the eight people who were killed, officials learned late that night that a ninth employee had died of his injuries.

Hendricks said he had spoken with victims’ family members and would provide support in any way they could.

Naunihal Singh, a superintendent of the light rail yard where the San Jose shooting occurred, spoke with emotion about losing his co-workers, saying those who worked with him had kind hearts and tried to help others, adding that he was feeling a mix of emotions.

George Sandoval, a manager also from the rail yard, said they had become a “family” and the incident was very difficult for everyone including himself.

The gunfire erupted at about 6:30 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday as the work day was beginning at a light-rail maintenance yard in the heart of Silicon Valley. The accused gunman shot himself as police closed in on him minutes after he started firing, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith.

The attack was the latest of at least nine deadly U.S. mass shootings in the past three months, including a string of attacks at Atlanta-area day spas in mid-March and a rampage days later that killed 10 at a Colorado supermarket.
