A constitutional crisis is unfolding in Samoa in the wake of the recent election. The country’s first female leader, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, was expected to form a new government for the first time in almost four decades, but today she and her FAST party were locked out of parliament. Caretaker Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele is refusing to accept defeat and is hoping to trigger a second general election. Political commentator and former editor of the Samoa observer – Mata’afa Keni Lesa says Tuilaepa and the long ruling HRPP are hanging on to power in the hopes of triggering another election.
