Roland Oliphant is the Daily Telegraph’s Moscow correspondent. He has lived and worked in the former Soviet Union for over a decade, spending much of that time reporting politics, business, and wildlife in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. He reported on the crisis in Ukraine from the outbreak of the Maidan protests in 2013, and witnessed the overthrow of Viktor Yanukovyuch, the annexation of Crimea, and the war in eastern Ukraine first hand.

Russia is a major great power, with the world’s second-most powerful military, and the fourth-highest military expenditure. As a recognised nuclear-weapon state, the country possesses the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear weapons.
