Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Rival protests in Peru as tensions rise over presidential vote” – below is their description.
Supporters of both of Peru’s political rivals have been out in huge numbers amid rising tensions over this month’s contested election.
Socialist contender Pedro Castillo, who narrowly leads the official count, has claimed victory.
But right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori is making claims of electoral fraud and is seeking to get votes annulled.
The fraud allegations prompted a group of retired senior military officers to call on military chiefs to reject Castillo if he is named president. In an open letter, they warned if electoral officials declared him the winner, the military could intervene.
President Francisco Sagasti has condemned the statement.
Analysts say some politicians are looking for any means to prevent Castillo from becoming president.
