Rishi Sunak has vowed to take “whatever steps are necessary to restore the integrity back into politics” as he was challenged over allegations of Tory sleaze following the sacking of Nadhim Zahawi.
The Prime Minister was asked this morning why “so many people” at the top of the Conservative Party are “finding it so difficult to follow the rules”, with Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock, Suella Braverman and Mr Zahawi listed as apparent examples.
Speaking at a Q&A event in Darlington, Mr Sunak said: “The things that happened before I was Prime Minister I can’t do anything about.
“What I think you can hold me to account for is how I deal with the things that arise on my watch and as you have seen when it came to Nadhim Zahawi I asked the independent adviser to look at it straight away, acted on his findings straight away.”
Mr Sunak told Sky News that “integrity is really important” in politics as well as accountability.
