The UK Government angered a lot of people last week, with their efforts to change standards rules to save a colleague who was facing a suspension. This Government has been characterized by frequent U-Turns, misplaced loyalty in the face of clear wrongdoing – in this case, and in the case of Dominic Cummings – and also has been willing to ignore or ride roughshod over convention in order to achieve its aims.
This most recent move has angered many Conservatives, including former Prime Minister, John Major, who view efforts to change rules in this way to be “unconservative”.
Sunak’s mea culpa – more of a we-a culpa as he’s claiming collective failings, not personal failings – may not prove to be sufficient to quell the fury of some who feel this was a step too far by a Government in which he has a key role. Some may view his ITV News appearance to be yet more evidence of his personal ambitions. Perhaps this is more opportunism on his part?
Got a comment on this story? Is it strange to see a senior Government Minister saying “we need to do better” one week after making a spectacular blunder? Is he showing remarkable disloyalty to his Leader? Leave your thoughts in the comments section, below. Please note comments are moderated before publication.
