Russian soldiers have intensified their attacks in Ukraine’s east. The city of Bakhmut has been a key objective for Moscow’s forces for some time.
The UK defense ministry has tweeted that Russia is likely planning to encircle the area. Facing a possible takeover, many residents feel they have no choice but to leave their homes in search of safety. Authorities are working to evacuate them as quick as they can.

Ukraine is a large country in Eastern Europe known for its Orthodox churches, Black Sea coastline and forested mountains. Its capital, Kiev, features the gold-domed St. Sophia’s Cathedral, with 11th-century mosaics and frescoes. Overlooking the Dnieper River is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a Christian pilgrimage site housing Scythian tomb relics and catacombs containing mummified Orthodox monks.
